Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

We provide support during your entire AAC journey. We help you find the best AAC system for your child and teach them how to use it.

Schedule A CONSULTATION

Comprehensive AAC Evaluation:

AAC evaluations are conducted over multiple sessions and consist of a speech and language assessment as well as the following:

  • Trialing of speech-generating devices
  • Support in choosing a device and related equipment to purchase (e.g., keyguard, mounting system, etc.)
  • Assistance with applications for funding
  • Instruction on how to use AAC throughout your day

A written report with recommendations will be provided upon completion of the evaluation.

AAC Therapy:

Therapy sessions focus on learning how to use an AAC system for language development and participation in daily activities.

Sessions may focus on:

  • Operational skills – learning how to operate a speech-generating device, such as refining body movements to touch a screen or activate a switch, understanding how to adjust device settings, or navigating through multiple pages.
  • Linguistic skills – targeting receptive and expressive language skills through the use of your AAC system.
  • Social skills – practicing using the device to participate in social exchanges.
  • Family training – teaching family members strategies to support language development, such as modeling language on the device and providing sufficient wait time.

Consultation:

We provide consulting services to family members, school personnel, and others in your child’s life to learn best practices for using a speech-generating device. We also provide recommendations for modifications to current AAC systems.
